Subject: Coopers Clear..anyone tried it?
So, at the moment I can't have beers that are high in carbs..GRRR~! Making my beer consumption for a while at 0! It's really not all that fun buuuut I tried to search for a beer I could drink while counting my carb intake. At first picked up 'Pure Blonde' buuuut I wasn't overly impressed by it. I mean it's okay but if you leave it to get luke warm imo changes from 'okay' to 'horrible'.

Then just reccently I stumbled onto Coopers CLEAR...I know Low Carb beers get lots of flack because what they are. However this beer has hit the spot for myself atleast.

It has flavour!! I'm a fan of dry beers..I started out drinking Asahi as my first choice of beer...Anyways..This beer isn't the best of the best...But when it comes to Low Carb it comes out on TOPS to me.

Anyone else tried it out?

Coopers is 3.5 carbs per bottle..so it's pretty low.

55 carbs per bottle or whole case? Cause 55 per bottle is pretty high..lol

Nice to know the answer. But yea if it's per case then that's pretty cool. Haven't see it for sale here though.

I've been looking into other low carb beers last night and quite a few I found never stated how many carbs were actually in the bottle or overal case. Shouldn't that be part of their marketing?

I picked up some Carlton Blonde Low Carb tonight..Will see if it's alright or not.

Follow up to the Carlton Blonde Low Carb...Not worth the time. It might be lower in carbs by .3 but the flavour is very weak. I hate to pour beer down the sink or waste any of it but it happened more than once!

People are crabby about Coopers Clear but the Carlton Blonde blows chunks..Had to be the most unappealing beer I've had in a long time. S'Kay because Coopers Clear is the best so far for me atleast.

You know, I've put a fair amount of thought and experimentation into this whole "carb" thing. To be perfectly honest I would rather go without a beer than drink one that wasn't packed full of flavour and interesting - I just get bored and think it's not worth 1/2 an hour on a treadmill. And when I am watching my calorie or carb in take I look for a beer that is higher in alcohol, screaming with flavour that gets better as it warms up, that is a sheer pleasure to drink - then I just take it easy, sip on ONE and stretch it out. Life's too short and the soporific affect makes all the other "going with out" that much easier. A Rauchbier is great for this as the lingering smokiness is incredibly satisfying. I know the low-carb-beer thing gets a lot of flack. It's that whole have your cake and eat it too philosophy (like sugar free, fat free, cocoa free, low carb chocolate - what's the point really - just don't have the chocolate or better yet, get a few buttons of pure, deliciously crafted Belgian finest and suck on it for half an hour) My other question is - WHAT IS ACTUALLY IN THESE PRODUCTS? There are some nasty little concoctions out there that can take a hang over to a whole new level. But - it is early days with the low carb phenomenon - let's see where it all heads. Keep us posted on your findings!

I can understand the whole 'have your cake and eat it too' deal....I don't really agree with artifical sweetners..Actually, I try to stay away from them as much as possible. As far as I can tell the Coopers Extra Dry doesn't have anything added in like sweetners..IF it does..They've done a bloody good job at hiding it. It does make one wonder how they get 'rid' of those carbs though.

Honestly the only reason why I've invested time into Low Carb beers is I need to lose weight and have a few Coopers over the weekend hasn't effected my weight..Actually, I'm still going down which is the obvious goal..lol And it's a diet I'll be on for quite some time annnd if I go without beer for so long I might cry..ahahaha. However, I've got my goals and will allow myself the occasional full strength beer so overal for me it's working.

I do think there is probably some low carb beers out there that DO nasty things to make them low carb...I'm highly doubtful I'd ever touch a Low Carb Bud. I don't enjoy normal Bud in the first place.

But overal the interesting thing I've found while searching online....There is a low carb beer called Virgin..It's organic..Goes on about how it's good blah blah blah...BUT there is nothing on the site to actully inform you how low carb it is. Same for Coopers and a few others I've found. This is a marketing tool that they are missing out on. I wanna know the carbs afteral wasn't this the first reason it was made in the first place?

I think low carb beers could get better over time the more people tinker with them. Guess it's wait and see. But I will update this thread on what I find/tried to let other curious people know.

Interesting about the Virgin beer - your point about them not actually listing the carbs... makes you wonder if it is similar to when they started using "Lite Olive Oil" - which meant pretty much nothing. You raise some great points! Let me know if you find anything spectacular.

My understanding is that an average lager only contains around 3% carbohydrates (starches and sugars) anyway, and that low carb beers are mostly marketing bs. Most of the kilojoule content of almost any beer comes from the alcohol anyway and not any remaining carbohydrates so if you need to restrict your kilojoule intake for health reasons you should choose a low alcohol rather than a low carb beer.

For example see:
http://www.fosters.com.au/enjoy/beer/beer_nutrition.htm
and
http://www.fosters.com.au/enjoy/beer/beer_and_diabetes.htm

BTW, I was under the impression that if a food product made a nutritional claim on the label (such as being low carb etc) that was required to have a nutritional information panel on the label. Beer seems to fit into a grey area in the legislation - it looks like if your product claims to be low in fat, alcohol or kilojoules the rules explicitly state you need the panel but it seems a bit vague when it comes to claims of low carbs.

See http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/ for some info on food labelling laws.

Have you heard of a diet called Atkins? Probably most people have one way or another. With this diet you don't count to kilojoules it's just the carb intake. But I do understand about what you mean when it comes to the kilojoules.

The beers that don't state how low in carbs is just on the websites..When you actually get the beer in your hands they usually tell you on the back of the bottle how much it contains. I'm just amused they don't state it on their websites to use it as an actual marketing tool. Afteral shouldn't they be stating it on their website?

If you check out: http://www.lowcarb-diet.com.au/low_carb_beer.htm you will see they list a number of low carb beers. Majority I've not found in Australia but nor does that suprize me either. But there are largers that do come in much higher than a 3% when it comes to beers.

It'd be nice if more beers overal listed their carbs for true comparison but that's just my current opinion lol.

Just reccentl tried the Boags Classic Blonde which is 3.7 carbs. I was pleasently suprized at how nice it was considering it's a 'low carb' so if I get sick of Coopers this is another one I can dabble in.
